A Change In Law Enforcement

CHICAGO --When the words “cop or police officer” are brought up it tends to have a negative connotation. Mainstream media mostly only shows cops killing someone or being too aggressive with them.

Within a group of officers, there are only ten percent of cops that are bad. According to Paul Chapman, “Along these lines, a police department of 20 could have 2 members that could be a problem or bad cop.”

There are very few times where we see officers the media shows law enforcement officers helping. Diane Latiker, founder of Kids Off the Block, a non-profit to keep youth in recreation instead of Chicago’s violent streets, said, “ Police can help people so much if they choose too because I’ve seen it”.

Members of the attorney general’s office are planning on modifying the law enforcement agency.

“I am with the attorney general’s office. What we are doing is conducting community discussions where we are soliciting ideas from the community, in terms of what they want to see reflected in the consent decree. The agreement would be what the parties come up with. There have been two previous studies. Both of these studies gave numerous suggestions in terms of how the police department should change things.” Skip G., expressed.

Building the community’s trust is one of many priorities the police department and other agencies should have.

Skip G. said, “Hopefully, this will result in a culture shift among the Chicago police department. If the consent decree is right that will be the first step toward changing the Chicago police department.”
